Push Past Your Limits

CrossFit Games Open workout 16.4 in the books. Gross.

13 minutes, as many rounds as possible of:

  • 55 deadlifts (225lbs)
  • 55 wallballs
  • 55 calorie row
  • 55 handstand pushups

I hate deadlifts (and they hate me) and rowing, but the whole point is a good reminder to me that if you only do the things you like on the days you feel good, you won’t ever accomplish anything of value in life.

I’m in some of my worst CrossFit shape I’ve been in for at least a few years, maybe my second year of CrossFit back in 2012. My training has varied this year, and focused CrossFit training has taken a backseat to business, relationships, & life in 2015-16. I still signed up for the Open knowing it wouldn’t be kind to me, but I still did it because like 90% of the people out there competing around the world, it’s not about making Regionals or the Games. We love to compete.

And the Open is a way every year to pour more gasoline on our competitive fire, push ourselves to a new level to see how far our body can go, and most of all, remind ourselves to get comfortable being uncomfortable – because that is the good shit that transfers from the gym into life. THAT level of being uncomfortable and pushing past our limits in a workout we may hate, is what prepares us to do the same in our lives & experience success that those who will never leave their comfort zone can never understand.

This concept applies to so many sports & so many types of training. Bodybuilding, figure, baseball, marathon racing, and more – each one, if done correctly, forces us into a place we’ve never been in order to strengthen us to the level at which we need to achieve our goal. I’ve found my home in the CrossFit community, and the growth that my one hour workout – or in Thursday’s case, 13 minutes – gives the other areas of my life.

Find your “limits” and push past them. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Set big goals – and reach them. Compete for your life. Every. Damn. Day.
