How do you set a big goal and just smash the shit out of it?
You’ve got to have accountability. Every big dream, every big goal that you set requires accountability in order to reach it.
So, let’s break this down.
A big goal you may have for this year is that you want to get a ton stronger. That’s not really specific. Maybe you want to get a little stronger. Maybe a ton stronger. What’s the difference in those two? If you don’t set a specific goal, you cannot have anything to aim at.
So first, be specific. Say, instead of saying I want to get stronger, maybe I focus on wanting to gain 20lbs on my back squat personal best. Or I want my 5K time to be 1:30 faster than it currently is. No matter what the goal is, be very specific so you can measure it.
Two, set deadlines. We give ourselves as long as we give ourselves. Trust me, I personally have done this with the new Compete every Day podcast. Do you know that thing was suppose to launch back in April? It’s mid-August and the podcast still isn’t live. The good news is that in late July I set a firm deadline of September 1st. As soon as I said it will go live September 1, I was forced to start making things happen. Instead of delaying it eve more, I was forced to have a timeline – and that timeline means I’ve got to make it work. Set a firm deadline on when your goals are to be reached.
Third, tell people you trust what your goal is and what you’re pursuing. It can be with our community group page, it can be your best friend, it can be your spouse, it can be your significant other, or it can even be your parents. Tell someone what you’re working toward so that they can hold you accountable. This is huge because you want someone that can ask you about it to keep it in your focus, and most importantly the person you tell is usually someone that you want to make proud by hitting your goal.
Fourth, understand mistakes happen. Sometimes we miss our deadlines and we fall short of our goals. But you know if we set our goals big enough, falling short of that still puts us 3, 4, or 5 steps ahead of where we were – and closer to where we will still want to be tomorrow.
Mistakes happen with everyone. So we adjust at that point, we set a new goal,a new timeline, and we race towards it. We don’t make excuses. We understand we fell short, but we’re motivated to not let that happen again. That is how we set big goals. That is how we crush them.
Four easy steps. Set a specific plan, be detailed. Two, make deadlines, set when you’re going to completed that goal by. Three, tell those you trust. Hey, comment below in this video and tell us what your goal is so we can help hold you accountable. Four, don’t be deterred by setbacks. Understand that they happen, but our setbacks are not fatal just as our victories are not permanent.
Make it your best week yet.
