The Little Things

Posted on

It’s the little things in life that make the biggest difference.

Those reps you didn’t cheat yourself short during a workout just to score a better time. That handwritten thank-you card you wrote after a job interview. The extra bleachers you ran at night when no one was watching. The sandwich and water you gave to the man on the street corner asking for change.

Sometimes in life the smallest things make a world of difference. Chris Brogan had a great blog this past week about how the road to success is a lot like flossing. Flossing isn’t the most fun activity and many of us are guilty of skipping it. But it’s not hard to do. It doesn’t take a lot of time. It’s vital to the health of your teeth and gums.

So why do we skip it so often?

Chris’ point is that if you spend a little time every day flossing, your teeth will get stronger and healthier. If you stop for a few weeks, your gums tend to get nasty very quickly. Success is the same way. You won’t get there without putting in the work every day. Even on the little things.

The road to success is full of the little things. Eat your greens. Make healthier nutritional choices. Write ten blog posts that suck and are thrown away. Keep writing until you create one that is great. Run an extra set of bleachers instead of quitting early. Find yourself with more energy and strength during a workout to beat your competition fair and square. Read one chapter of a business book before bed. Learn something new every day to help you compete for your goals.

In order to get to where you want to be, you have to take a few small steps forward every day. Heck, even one step forward every day. But you have to make that little move forward. Success is glamorous and attractive to many. The road there? No so much. But the successful aren’t afraid to do a little flossing.
