The 2013 ESPY Awards highlighted the inspirational bond between Dick & Rick Hoyt, the father-son duo who have completed 27 triathlons, 70 marathons, and numerous 5K & 10K races together. Their story captivated the nation and brought tears to most as videos of Dick pushing Rick’s wheelchair every single event. Their courage has inspired best friends to attempt the same thing.

Gareth Scotcher is confined to life in a wheelchair since his diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2003 (Wales Online). Doctors expected him to die within five years. It has been over a decade since the diagnosis and Gareth is still going strong. Together, with his best friend Nicky Rees, Gareth will compete in the Long Course Weekend triathlon. Similar to how the Hoyts compete in triathlons, Nicky will pull Gareth in a canoe and then push him in a buggy the entire running section. Gareth will even help pedal during the cycling portion by using a modified hand-pedal in the passenger car.

The pair will compete in front of 15,000 spectators and alongside 3,000 additional competitors. To read more of their story, visit Wales Online here.
